Historian: Crusader motto "Deus vult" is a myth
"Deus vult", meaning "God wills it", is tattooed on the arm of Pete Hegseth, probably the future US Secretary of Defence.
The exclamation is attributed to Pope Urban II as a call to crusade in 1095. According to Marburg historian Georg Strack, however, this is just a legend.
What did pope urban ii promise those who fought in the crusades"Urban II never used this quote in texts written by himself or his chancery," Strack told the Catholic News Agency (KNA).
Only one chronicle, that of Robert the Monk, which was written around ten years after the Pope's call to crusade at a synod in Clermont, France, quotes the exclamation at all, Strack explained.
The author was aware from another chronicle that the northern French crusaders used "Deus vult" as a war cry or sign of recognition among themselves. "Robert's aim was to present the crusade as a divine and papally led project, which is why he claimed that Urban II had heard the war cry 'Deus vult' in Clermont and approved of it."
