          This framed piece consists of a clipped signature which reads, “Hd Qrs 17th Army Corps / near Vicksburg.

        6. Miss. June 18 1863 / J. B. McPherson / Maj. General”, in which only the signature is in McPherson’s hand.  The clipped paper measures 3 3/4” x 2 ½”. Next to the signature is a CDV with a bust view of McPherson. The lower right corner of the clipper paper is missing, otherwise in very fine condition; the CDV is clean and in excellent condition.

          Both items are on gold cards, which are just slightly larger than their dimensions.

          The two cards are mounted on a dark blue backing which has faded to somewhat purple tone, and are housed in a modern wood frame that measures 8 ¼” x 12”.

          James Birdseye McPherson began his career after graduating first in his class from the United States Military Academy class of 1853, a class that included Philip Sheridan and future foe John Bell Hood.  After graduation, he was commissioned into the Corps of Engineers, and participate
